Congress passes H. Res. 1091, calling Burmese actions a genocide

The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed H. Res. 1091, which calls the Burmese military’s actions against the Rohingya people a genocide and condemns the military’s brutal violence against civilians. Earlier this year, the United Nations called for Burmese generals to face international tribunals on charges of genocide and the US Holocaust Memorial Museum declared there is “compelling evidence” of an ongoing genocide.

House Resolution 1091:

  • Condemns the Burmese military and security forces for attacks against civilians
  • Calls the actions committed by the Burmese military in northern Rakhine State in 2017 a genocide
  • Calls upon State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint to pardon Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo and other journalists and political prisoners

“The United States has a moral obligation to call these crimes genocide. Failing to do so gives the perpetrators cover and hinders efforts to bring those accountable to justice. With this resolution, the House fulfills its part of that duty,” House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) said.
