Washington, D.C.- Emgage Action, a national Muslim American advocacy organization, condemns the murder of George Floyd, a black man who reportedly told a police officer kneeling on his neck that he couldn’t breath. He was pronounced dead hours later. His death is reminiscent of Eric Garner, who desperately pleaded “I can’t breathe” while being placed in chokehold by the police. Floyd’s death is yet another instance of police brutality and anti-black violence this month, including those that claimed the lives of Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery.
“It is absolutely heartbreaking to continuously hear about innocent black people being unjustly slain as a result of police brutality and anti-black violence. Black mothers should not constantly worry about their children becoming a hashtag. This horrifying reality must be confronted with a push towards mandatory implicit racial bias trainings for law enforcement officers and greater accountabilty for those who misuse and abuse the public’s trust. Our condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who have been killed or harmed. There is a pandemic that is also killing America, and it is not the one that is grabbing the headlines.
