What’s Happening
Federal immigration agents raided Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C. home last week as part of an investigation into decades-old immigration paperwork tied to her citizenship. According to reporting from The Washington Post, the investigation is focused on whether Omar or her late father provided false information about her age when their family came to the United States as Somali refugees. Federal agents reportedly seized her phone, passport, computers, and other materials, while more than a dozen subpoenas have been issued to members of her family.
The raid comes just weeks before the midterm elections and marks an extraordinary escalation against one of President Trump’s most frequent political targets. Trump has spent years attacking Omar over her Somali heritage, Muslim faith, and citizenship, and members of his administration have openly raised the possibility of deporting her. Just last month, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said that “something’s gonna happen” in the investigation and suggested Omar could be deported if the administration determined she should not have been admitted to the country.
The timing has also raised questions about the Justice Department’s longstanding safeguards against political interference. DOJ policy prohibits federal prosecutors and agents from timing investigative actions to influence an election, and the Department has historically avoided public investigative steps against candidates within roughly 60 days of Election Day. Omar is currently running for reelection, and federal agents searched her home just over three weeks before voters head to the polls.
The raid also comes amid a broader wave of anti-Somali and anti-Muslim rhetoric directed at Omar and Minnesota’s Somali community. On the same day agents searched her home, Trump attacked Omar and Somalia at a campaign rally as the crowd began chanting “Deport, deport.” Omar has denied wrongdoing and called the investigation the latest escalation in a campaign of political intimidation against her.
House Democrats, including Hakeem Jeffries, party whip Katherine Clark, and caucus chair Pete Aguilar, have issued statements rebuking the raid and in defense of Omar, highlighting the “weaponization of the federal government against Donald Trump’s adversaries.” Rep. Kamlager-Dove went so far as to call it “fascism in the extreme.” No Republicans have spoken out against the raid.
Our Perspective
What is happening to Rep. Omar cannot be separated from the broader environment Muslim, immigrant, and particularly Somali communities have been living through. Over the last year, we have watched anti-Somali rhetoric intensify alongside an immigration enforcement agenda that has treated entire communities as suspect. When that rhetoric, paired with political theatre, becomes familiar enough, it becomes easier to accept increasingly extraordinary uses of government power as just another headline.
The Consequences of Unchecked Federal Power
We have already seen where unchecked federal immigration enforcement can lead. Last December, the Trump administration launched Operation Metro Surge in Minnesota after weeks of escalating rhetoric directed at the state’s Somali community. Over the next two and a half months, roughly 4,000 people were arrested as communities across the Twin Cities faced an enormous federal enforcement presence.
And we saw the horrific scenes that followed. Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three and U.S. citizen, was shot and killed by an ICE officer. Weeks later, Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old VA intensive care nurse and U.S. citizen, was shot and killed by a Border Patrol officer. Videos captured by people on the ground showed the final moments before both were killed and raised questions about the federal government’s initial accounts of what happened. These were the consequences of a federal crackdown unfolding in neighborhoods where people lived, worked, raised their families, and tried to protect their neighbors.
What happened in Minnesota showed just how far the consequences of unchecked federal power can reach. Yet months later, we are once again confronted by how that power is being used, this time against a sitting member of Congress who has spent years facing attacks on her faith, heritage, and citizenship.
The Danger of Political Theatre
The raid also casts an air of suspicion and guilt around Omar, creating the impression that she must have something to hide. And the timing is deliberate. Coming just weeks before her race, the raid muddies the waters and puts a cloud of suspicion over Omar at a critical moment in the election.
There is no evidence to support this allegation and yet it has not stopped Trump and his allies from repeating it as though it were already established fact. We have seen this playbook time and time again. Baseless claims begin as political rhetoric, then get repeated and amplified by commentators, elected officials, and others with large platforms. Several prominent Republicans have regurgitated and reinforced the lie that Omar is in the country illegally, including the Vice President Vance, who said, “We actually think that Ilhan Omar definitely committed immigration fraud.” Vance, in the past, claimed Haitian immigrants in Ohio were eating peoples’ pets, and later stated on CNN that he was willing to “create stories” to draw national media attention.
A conspiracy, piece of disinformation, or lie, however distorted it may be, can take on a life of its own when repeated enough and have serious consequences for the person or community being targeted. Omar has been experiencing this pattern for years. Trump has not left her alone since her early political career, and his attacks have only escalated over time, including repeated suggestions that she should be deported. What we are seeing now is the latest escalation in a years-long fixation on Omar.
Omar represents many of the identities Trump has repeatedly targeted in his political rhetoric. She is an immigrant, a refugee, a Muslim, a liberal, and a Black woman. At the heart of the attacks against her is a larger question about who gets to claim equal citizenship in America and whose belonging can continually be called into question. Omar escaped devastating conditions and made her way to America, where she eventually became a member of Congress representing the people of Minnesota. Yet even after building a life here and being elected to represent her community, her citizenship and her right to belong are still being questioned.
Standing Firm in the Face of Intimidation
What is happening to Rep. Omar goes beyond the targeting of one member of Congress. When years of political attacks are followed by the use of federal power against that same person, it raises questions about political intimidation and what that means for communities that are already under immense scrutiny. We cannot become numb to this simply because we have seen so much of it before.
Emgage Action stands with Rep. Ilhan Omar and with our communities in this moment. With an important election just weeks away, intimidation cannot be allowed to push people away from the political process or make us afraid to speak out. We will continue to organize, advocate, and make our voices heard because our communities have fought too hard for a voice in our democracy to retreat from it now.
