Washington, D.C.- Emgage Action condemns Rep. Boebert over anti-Muslim comments she made about Rep. Omar. Democratic leadership called for Rep. Boebert’s censure because of this.
In a recent conversation with Rep. Omar, Rep. Boebert doubled down on her comments, and refused to publicly apologize. Yesterday, Rep. Omar and other Muslim members of Congress held a press conference about this issue, during which Rep. Omar played a threatening voicemail she received after the Boebert incident.
“We support the Democratic leadership’s call to censure Rep. Boebert due to the disturbing anti-Muslim comments she made about Rep. Omar. We also urge Rep. Boebert to publicly apologize to Rep. Omar. These comments hurt all Muslims, normalizes Islamophobia, and can contribute to violence against us. This hate speech is especially frightening in the wake of the January 6 Capitol attacks, as we can see the tangible violence that can be aroused. No member of Congress should seek to sow this type of hate and division in our country. And it’s time Republicans address this recurring issue in a meaningful way.” -Iman Awad, Deputy Director of Emgage Action
