We welcome the recent announcement of ending the Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention Program (TVTP), a permutation of the Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) program.
CVE bolstered War on Terror culture and scrutinized Muslim Americans through the lenses of national security. It used racist, pseudoscientific ideas to baselessly criminalize Muslim American youth, associated markers of Islamic identity with falling into a path of violent extremism, and adulterated our safe spaces with the fear of being surveilled.
We are proud to have been a part of this effort in ensuring that President Biden fulfilled this important campaign promise of ending TVTP, and appointing Muslim Americans in key leadership positions in this arena. We intend to hold the administration accountable in any future initiatives to ensure that Muslim Americans are protected from the violence of state-sanctioned racial profiling and surveillance, which our community bears so much trauma from in the past two decades.
