Inside the Rise of Anti-Muslim Rhetoric in Congress

Last week the Sharia Free America Caucus, co-chaired by Congressional Representatives Keith Self and Chip Roy, took over the House Floor for a full hour of speeches. This was the culmination of a deliberate, coordinated attack meant to mainstream dangerous anti-Muslim rhetoric under the banner of defending “freedom” and the Constitution.

What’s Happening?

What appears as one hour of speeches is in reality the opening of a much broader pattern of policy.

You need to hear what the caucus is saying...

During the session, caucus members repeatedly warned of “Muslim enclaves,” the “Islamification of America,” and citing isolated incidents as proof of a “takeover.” They are actively manufacturing conspiracy theories and propagating dangerous tropes, ultimately claiming that Islam itself is incompatible with American values.

There is a long history of intervention in the Middle East and any serious policy has to acknowledge that. But that history should never be used to justify blaming or marginalizing Muslim Americans today. A principled approach means holding everyone to the same human rights standards while rejecting scapegoating and rhetoric that treats people here as suspect because of conflicts abroad.

You’ve unlocked the full article.

There is no Sharia threat to America, except the very real threat of these lawmakers pitting Americans against one another and manufacturing dangers where none exist. It is deeply concerning that members are using time on the House floor to attack Muslim Americans instead of addressing the urgent needs facing people across the country, including rising costs and economic insecurity. Calling for laws targeting so-called “Sharia-influenced” immigration and casting American Muslims as a threat rather than as neighbors and fellow citizens is not only dangerous, it is a profound misuse of congressional attention and public trust.

How does this impact Muslim communities across America?

This kind of rhetoric creates a climate of hostility that puts Muslims at risk, including leaders like Ilhan Omar, who had liquid sprayed at her during a town hall. When elected officials label Muslims as threats, it sends a message that this kind of behavior is acceptable and can lead to even more harmful actions. It is a deliberate campaign to begin codifying Islamophobia into policy. By spreading this anti-Muslim propaganda on the House Floor, the caucus gives cover for hate, profiling, and discriminatory bills that target Muslim Americans.

We have seen these consequences following 9/11, when the government engaged in widespread surveillance, infiltration of mosques and organizations, and caused a massive uptick in Islamophobic incidents. This history shows how such political attacks can legitimize discrimination and harm. The result is real terror for more than 4.5 million Muslim Americans; doctors, teachers, veterans, and families who contribute to this country every single day. When elected officials mainstream lies about Sharia, the result is more fear, more violence, and more barriers to full belonging in America.

Policy Perspectives

This is not just one hour of speeches.

It is part of a coordinated, nationwide pattern of embedding Islamophobia into policy. Just weeks ago, Texas lawmakers launched their own Sharia Free Texas Caucus, directly inspired by the federal group. The same anti-Muslim playbook is spreading to statehouses across the country.

Even in New York City, efforts to address Islamophobia are met with backlash. When the City Council holds briefings or disciplines members for clear anti-Muslim posts, critics label it “radical” or an attack on free speech. This double standard shows how the caucus strategy works: harmful speech is allowed to spread, but the moment it is addressed, the response becomes the problem.

In just three months, the Sharia Free America Caucus has already surged to 60 members from 25 states. That makes it one of the largest and fastest-growing caucuses in Congress, rivaling the long-established Congressional Black Caucus which is 62 members, larger than the Hispanic Caucus at 43 members, and already more than half the size of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, which has over 100 members.

This rapid expansion proves their strategy is working for them. This should alarm every American who believes in equality. When anti-Muslim hate becomes this organized and mainstream, our communities pay the price in safety, opportunity, and basic respect in our day-to-day lives. We must call it out and stop it before it hardens into permanent U.S. domestic policy.
