Muslim Advocacy Group Responds to U.S. State Department Calling China’s Repression of Uyghurs “Genocide”

Washington, D.C.- The U.S. Department of State has labeled China’s repression of Uyghur Muslims as “genocide.” In a statement, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed, “I believe this genocide is ongoing, and that we are witnessing the systematic attempt to destroy Uighurs by the Chinese party-state.”

Previously, there were allegations by former National Security Adviser Bolton that President Trump encouraged Chinese President Xi to “go ahead with building [concentration] camps”, where over a million Uyghur Muslims would eventually be detained.

“This genocide designation is long overdue — as it comes only during the final hours of Trump’s presidency. Recognizing the atrocities perpetrated by the Chinese state against the Uyghur population is a necessary step in order to hold those complicit accountable. Under the Biden-Harris administration, we hope that policies including the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act are passed to put an end to this horrific crime against humanity. It is past time for our government and the international community to take action and put an end to this genocide.” – Iman Awad, Deputy Director of Emgage Action
